Kunio-Kun Wiki

Sabu (さぶ?) is the leader of the Sanwakai who was first featured in Nekketsu Renegade Kunio-kun. He is a recurring antagonist and is described as being ruthless and brash, though in reality can be seen as a rather pitiful leader. He often relies on using a semi-automatic handgun instead of using his fists.

Sabu is the younger biological brother of Lee and was the adoptive father of Ken.

Appearances[]

Nekketsu Renegade Kunio-kun[]

Sabu debuted in the original Nekketsu Renegade Kunio-kun as the final boss alongside his knife-wielding subordinates.

Sabu does not often go for punches or kicks and will instead pull out his handgun to take out Kunio in a single shot. In the Arcade version, Sabu's goons will attack Hiroshi outside of Nekketsu High School like the other bosses do. Sabu appears with some more yakuza inside of the Sanwakai Office after taking out the goons at the entrance. In the Famicom version, Hiroshi is instead taken away by a car at the beginning of the game and is rescued by Kunio. Sabu's stage instead requires Kunio to navigate through a maze of doors that will have random enemies or bosses in each until he reaches Sabu, where he will then fight Kunio alone.

Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio-tachi no Banka[]

Sabu appears as the main antagonist of the story. A few months prior to the events of the story, Sabu adopts Ken and plans on using him to get revenge on Kunio for his prior defeat in Nekketsu Renegade Kunio-kun, as Ken is similar in appearance to Kunio.

The Sanwakai are first rumored to be involved by Ryūta after he is defeated by Kunio and friends. The rumors are later confirmed true by Takayama and Mamoru, who directly names Sabu as being the adopted father of Ken. Sabu would eventually meet Kunio and the others inside of the office at the pachinko parlor, where he would then shoot their girlfriends Misako and Kyōko. Shortly after, Sabu hires Misuzu as a bodyguard and heads off with Ken to his mansion, to where he would then send Kunio and Riki down a trapdoor after being confronted by them again. Ken eventually faces off against Kunio and Riki and loses the fight. Disappointed, Sabu shoots Ken and head backs into the room he was staying in to activate the mansion's self destruction device. Kunio and Riki then fight Sabu in the burning room and defeat him.

When fighting, Sabu will use kicks to whichever player is too close to him. Otherwise, he will always fire a single gunshot that will deal more than three quarters of your health.

Super Dodge Ball[]

Sabu appears as a selectable team captain. Unlike previous iterations of him, Sabu is instead described as being an honorable hard worker. He has an average attack power and special moves that aren't very strong, but he has the strongest combined special move of all the captains. His special moves are the Jingi Whirl, Yakuza Fire, Yakuza Reflect, and the Ninkyo Explosion.

Sabu is voiced by Yukimasa Kishino.

Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun Special[]

Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun Special is a remake of the original Nekketsu Renegade Kunio-kun and acts as a reboot of the franchise starting from a new continuity.

Hiroshi's father is against the construction of a casino which is the reason for Sabu to antagonize Hiroshi. After his defeat to Kunio, Sabu agrees to keep his hands off Tokyo.

River City: Tokyo Rumble[]

Sabu is revealed to be behind the Tokyo Lion Alliance's attempt of conquering Tokyo after Shishiō is shot by him after he lost his fight against Kunio and friends. With the help of his older brother Lee, he takes Kunio's teacher Madoka hostage and flies to Hong Kong. After Kunio and his crew take out Sabu's goons, Ginjishi interrupts with a now freed Madoka and is then shot by Sabu while blocking a bullet meant to hit Madoka. Enraged, Kunio and his crew proceed to fight Sabu and Lee and successfully defeat the two.

River City Super Sports Challenge ~All Stars Special~[]

Sabu appears as the captain the Outlaw team and is able to be played outside of the story mode by using a code on the Mode Select screen. Sabu is able to use the Throw Bomb and the Fight Kick.

River City Melee: Battle Royal Special[]

Sabu returns as the captain of the Outlaw team and are involved in the story mode. Sabu is able to use the Bomb Throw, Fight Kick, and the Sword Special.

River City Girls[]

In this continuity, Sabu is the father of Sabuko.

During the events of the story, Sabu is currently in prison and has left Sabuko in-charge of running the Sanwakai in his absence. Sabu is first mentioned by Noize as she suggests Misako and Kyoko to go check the Sanwakai Tower and states that it's where Sabu runs his criminal empire. When Misako asks how she knows of Sabu, Noize admits that Sabu paid for her first album which isn't a fact that she's proud of. During gameplay, statues of Sabu can be destroyed across the city and he can be seen in a painting holding a white dog during Sabuko's fight.

River City Melee Mach!![]

Sabu would have his Bomb Throw replaced with the Angry Bullet.

River City Saga: Three Kingdoms[]

Sabu plays the role of Dong Zhuo, a tyrannical and selfish general in the late Han dynasty.

In the story mode, Dong Zhuo's army is seen fighting alongside Liu Bei (Goda), Guan Yu (Kunio), and Zhang Fei (Godai) against the Yellow Turbans after Liu Bei found a dropped letter from Zhang Jiao (Nishimura) informing members of the Yellow Turbans for an attack on Jizhou. Dong Zhuo pays three coins to the group as a reward for helping his army in fight against the Yellow Turbans. In the second chapter, Cao Cao (Yamada) attempts to kill Dong Zhuo at the Imperial Court, though his subordinate Lu Bu (Misuzu) steps in to protect him. By the end of the chapter, Dong Zhuo is backed into a corner and sets fire to the capital in Luoyang, fleeing to Chang'an to establish a new capital. Dong Zhuo is then betrayed by Lu Bu and subsequently killed.

River City Girls 2[]

Sabu is informed of Sabuko's humiliating defeat in River City Girls and breaks out of prison to return as the patriarch of the Sanwakai and take control over River City. With the city now under his control, Sabu remains absent from the story until the heroes reach the underground of the Sanwakai Tower. During this section, Sabu introduces himself and continues to taunt the group until they reach the room he's hiding in. With a serum taken that greatly increases his strength, he starts to explain his plan to the group though is continuously interrupted. Misako, Kyoko, and the others then fight against Sabu, to where he is then defeated. Sabu threatens to go after the groups' friends and loved ones, though is punched by everyone through all of the floors of the Sanwakai Tower shortly after. Sabu then crashes into the helicopter Sabuko and Ken are still flying above the rooftop.
